On October 17, 2019,Ceremony for the Conferment of Honorary Professorship on David C. Schmittlein was held at Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM). Present were Mansfield Chair Professor BAI Chong-En, Dean of Tsinghua SEM, Professor CHEN Yubo, Senior Associate Dean of Tsinghua SEM, Associate Dean XU Xin, Associate Dean ZHONG Xiaohan, Associate Dean LI Jizhen and Assistant Dean XUE Jian.
During the ceremony, Dean BAI presented the letter of honorary appointment to Dean Schmittlein. Dean BAI said, Dean Schmittlein has made tremendous efforts in deepening the partnership between MIT Sloan and Tsinghua SEM.He has been serving the Tsinghua SEM Advisory Board since 2007 and has attended the Board Meeting for 9 times. It’s our honor and pleasure to invite Dean Schmittlein to be an Honorary Professor of Tsinghua University. This invitation will play an important role in promoting academic exchanges and cooperation between the two schools, and thus in anticipating a new stage of partnership between us.
Dean Schmittlein were grateful for Tsinghua University to confer the title of honorary professor to him, as well as the academic friends who attended the ceremony. In his remark, he spoke highly of the efforts of the two schools in research and visits, and looked forward to further close cooperation between the two schools in the future.
In 1997, the IMBA program was established. In 2013, the program was merged with the Chinese taught Full-Time MBA program to form the Tsinghua-MIT Global MBA Program. Out of the 50 credits required to graduate from the GMBA program, 7 are taught by MIT Sloan Faculty. Over the past 20 years, 1,900+ Tsinghua MBA students obtained the certificates.
After the ceremony, David Schmittlein communicated with some of the Tsinghua SEM faculty on academic, research, teaching and other topics. Dean Schmittlein answered the questions raised by the faculty. Dean Schmittlein expressed that such dialogue can help him learn more about Tsinghua SEM and bring his experience to Tsinghua SEM for a mutual development.

David Schmittlein joined the MIT Sloan School of Management as John C Head III Dean in October, 2007. Dean Schmittlein received his Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degrees in Business from Columbia University. His research assesses marketing processes and develops methods for improving marketing decisions. He is widely regarded for his work estimating the impact of a firm's marketing actions, designing market and survey research, and creating effective communication strategies.
