August 23, 2018 - Tsinghua University announced Thursday that Professor BAI Chong-En has been appointed as the 5th Dean of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM).

Dean BAI Chong-En is Mansfield Freeman Chair Professor and also the director of the National Institute for Fiscal Studies of Tsinghua University. He earned his Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from University of California at San Diego (UCSD) and in Economics from Harvard University. His research interests include Institutional Economics, Economic Growth and Development, Public Economics, Finance, Corporate Governance and Chinese Economy.

Dean BAI is a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the “13th Five-Year National Development Plan” Expert Committee, the Chinese Economists 50 Forum, the China Finance 40 Forum, China Info 100, the Asian Development Bank Institute Advisory Council and the Executive Committee of International Economic Association. He was a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the People’s Bank of China, a non-resident Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution, and served as Adjunct Vice-President of Beijing State-Owned Assets Management Co.

During the announcement meeting, Professor QIAN Yingyi, former dean of Tsinghua SEM, expressed his gratitude to the University and the faculty and staff of the School for giving him the opportunity to serve the School and for their trust and support in the last 12 years. He recalled that at the announcement meeting of his deanship in 2006, he said that being a dean “is not only a job, but a cause,” and “I will do all in my full strength for this cause”. He added that it was these two promises he made at the time that had been the source of his inspiration as the dean for the past 12 years.

In his inauguration speech, Dean BAI Chong-En marked the efforts and contributions made by former dean QIAN Yingyi for the past 12 years. “To succeed Professor QIAN Yingyi, whom I have been privileged to work with and truly respect, we are committed to pursuit of excellence not only on the high standard of research but academic creativity. I will dedicate myself to the development of Tsinghua SEM, together with faculties, staff, students, alumni and friends, to achieve the ultimate goal of contributing to the development of China’s economy and society as well as to make an impact in the world”, said BAI.

CHEN Xu, Party Secretary of the CPC Committee of Tsinghua University, delivered a speech at the meeting. XU Qinghong, Director of the Organization Department of the CPC Committee of Tsinghua University, announced the new team of the administrative leadership of the School.

Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM) was established in 1984. ZHU Rongji was the founding dean of the School and the former deans include ZHAO Chunjun, HE Jiankun and QIAN Yingyi. With the mission "To Advance Knowledge and Cultivate Leaders for China and the World", for over 34 years, Tsinghua SEM has been growing fast along with the reform, opening-up and development of the Chinese economy. Today, Tsinghua SEM continues to strive for building a world-class school of economics and management.
