Wang Yu from Cohort 2007 in the School of Economics and Management (SEM) at Tsinghua University secured victory with a jump of 2.33m in the men’s high jump. This is the national record in almost 23 years and the second best in the world (this year’s world record is 2.34m). Since China’s high jump star Zhu Jianhua retired in 1985, only one athlete cleared 2.33m in 1990. Throughout the competition, Wang Yu was on his top form. He cleared 2.15m, 2.20m, 2.25m and 2.28m all on the first attempt, with 2.28m equaling the highest mark of men’s outdoor high jump. After clearing 2.31 m, Wang Yu continued to aim for 2.33 m and succeeded at the third attempt.
