Dean QIAN Yingyi delivering speech
The Dean’s speech, themed “market and innovation,” analyzed the chances and challenges for China in the post-crisis era. The Dean encouraged students to apply the perspectives of modern economics to current domestic issues. He also briefly reviewed the developmental history of America, other western powers and the Soviet Union during the economic crisis in the 1930s.
Quoting from J. A. Joseph Alois Schumpeter, Dean QIAN Yingyi said, the dynamics of the market lies with a “creative destruction” that disrupts existing ways of production and consumption. The innovative spirit of entrepreneurship should be highly valued.
In closing, the Dean stressed the need to remain objective in judging the opportunities and confusions for China brought by the crisis. The crisis reveals the weaknesses of the system, but the advantages of the market remain, and the innovative power of the US and other developed countries are not weakened by the downturn.
