On August 29, 2008, a welcome session for new undergraduates was held at the International Hall of Weilun Building, Tsinghua SEM. The newly enrolled undergraduates attended the ceremony as they are about to begin their new journey at the School.

The session was attended by Dean of Tsinghua SEM Qian Yingyi, Associate Dean Yang Bin, Executive Associate Dean Chen Guoqing, Associate Dean Chen Zhangwu, and Associate Dean Zhu Yan. The session was hosted by Assistant Dean Qian Xiaojun. Professor Qian Yingyi, Professor Yang Bin and Associate Professor Sun Jing from the Department of Management Science and Engineering addressed the conference. Student speakers Wu Xiangwen, Wang Lu made presentations at the session.

"A year's plan starts with spring (Chinese saying)……what will your harvest be like after four years depends on what do you think and what's your aspiration like at the very beginning of your undergraduate study, as well as what kind of efforts you have made during the four-year study," said Associate Dean Yang Bin. Yang also told the freshmen that the first thing they should learn after being admitted to university is "appreciation"; they should be grateful to their families, teachers and friends who have given tremendous support in helping them achieve today's success.
