According to the data released by ARTPRICE website, in 2008, in terms of the amount of business of the contemporary art pieces, China has overtaken France and come up to the third place in the world. The development of contemporary art is closely related to capital and the market as it follows the development of the art market itself. Large investments have changed the trend of the value of art pieces even to the point of hastening the movement of capitalization of art. The value of art pieces has been accepted by society. As galleries continue to develop and the quantity, scale and quality of art fairs increase along with the enthusiastic attendance of auctions, the “market” has become one of the driving forces behind the development of Chinese contemporary art. Galleries, auctioneers, museums and collectors and various other people in society enjoy and love this process yet they are concerned about it.When facing the market forces, artists also hold different attitudes and standpoints, which derive many new questions. The market for Chinese contemporary art pieces shows great potential, but at the same time, it faces many questions that had never arisen before.
The scholars, artists and art dealers taking part in the forum studied relevant questions in depth under themes of " art, capital and ideology in a global vision," "art, capital and market in a global vision", "art collecting and art investment," and "art capital and the Chinese context." The viewpoints and suggestions of the participants at the forum is expected to exert positive influence on promoting the progress of art market in China as well as the development of related disciplines.
