Tsinghua SEM has successfully won the champion title at the 51th Ma Yuehan Cup Sports Meeting as its last event (track-and-field) was closed on April 27, 2008. It’s the tenth time for the School to lift up Ma Yuehan Cup after nearly one-year competition.
The School got the women’s team champion title and the men’s team runner-up at Sunday’s track-and-field competition, which made the School’s team score came to the top among all competitors in the event. Vice Chairmen of the University CouncilHu Heping, Vice President of the University Chen Xu, Tsinghua SEM Dean Qian Yingyi, Executive Associate Dean Chen Guoqing, Associate Dean Yang Bin, Associate Dean Chen Zhangwu, Associate Dean Zhu Yan, Assistant Dean Mao Bo, and Assistant Dean Qian Xiaojun attended the awarding ceremony of the Ma Yuehan Cup held on Sunday.
The Ma Yuehan Cup includes a series of sports activities held throughout the year which culminates in the final competition every spring. The Cup is named in honor of famed physical education teacher Ma Yuehan, who started his 50-year career at Tsinghua in 1914. The 51th Ma Yuehan Cup Students Sports meeting, which begins from falls semester of 2007 has 37 programs including balls, chess, swimming, etc.. Tsinghua SEM team won the champion title in events of freshmen sports meeting, rope jumping, tennis, football, chess and aerobics; and won the champion title for Group A competitions in female basketball, badminton and handball.
Tsinghua SEM moved to the Group A competition in 1997 after it won champion title for three consecutive years in Group B competition. The School won Ma Yuehan Cup for the first time in 1998 when the sports meeting included track-and-field competition only. Since 1999, ball sports were introduced into the Ma Yuehan Cup, and the sport meeting has gradually evolved into a “mini-Olympic” of Tsinghua University as various sport activities was included.
