On Sept 1st, the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University (Tsinghua SEM) launched the welcome meeting for 2006 new guaduate students. There are 816 new graduate students, including 138 master students , 52 doctoral students, 425 MBA students, and 201 EMBA students joining the school this year,.. Dean He Jiankun, Associate Dean Yang Bin,, Associate Dean Chen Zhangwu, Associate Dean Tong Yunhuan, Assitant Dean Mao Bo and representatives of faculty and students attended the meeting. Assitant Dean Zhu Hengyuan chaired the meeting.
Dean He Jiankun first welcomed new students. He introduced school’s present situation and achievements. SEM was developed under the environment of China’s Reform and Opening Policy. For the past two decades SEM captured the trend and has been moving to the right direction. The fast growth of China provides both the school and the students historical opportunities and magnificent future. Dean He emphasized the importance of “ethics” to students. He set expectations for students: being trustworthy, being creative, and studying in earnest.
Associate Dean Yang Bin also strengthened the necessity of being ethical. Further, he gave specific suggestions for students. For those who graduated from SEM undergraduate programs, he suggested them to “think of yourselves as new to the school”, and constantly pursue new knowledge. For Ph.D. candidates, he recommended them focus on methodology, and try to solve Chinese economic and business problems. He stated that understanding Chinese environment, studying Chinese challenges, and creating Chinese theories are the foci of Tsinghua SEM. For MBA students, he encouraged them to strive to be “competent global managers” during the study at SEM.
Liu Lingling, Deputy Department head of Economics Department, welcomed new students on behalf of faculty members. Master student representative WuJian and second-year MBA representative Cui Yali, shared their own experiences with new students.
Both domestic and international students attended the meeting. There are 40 international MBA students joining SEM this year. They come from various countries such as US, Germany, Russia, Korea, Japan, etc. The number of international students reaches a peak this year.
